Tchegera Island Tented Camp

About Tchegera Island Tented Camp

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning your very own private island, this tented camp offers a slice of that lifestyle at a fraction of the price! Tchegera is a crescent-shaped island blanketed in greenery, which offers the perfect place to unwind after a long day of trekking in Virunga National Park, just across the water. On a clear day you’ll have views of four volcanoes rising above the landscape, and as night falls, the lava lake within Mount Nyiragongo will set the sky aflame.

From the comfort of your tent, you’ll have a front-row seat to this spectacular lightshow.

These light and airy tents are reminiscent of those found on traditional African safaris, but perched on a peaceful island rather than in the middle of savannah.

Just like the huts perched atop the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, this tented camp set up on the remains of a collapsed volcanic caldera in the middle of Lake Kivu will make your stay in the DRC one of a kind. It will feel like a real privilege to set foot on this miniature oasis, populated by nothing other than birds and butterflies flitting through the trees and a contingent of rangers and helpful staff who will do all they can to make your stay as pleasurable as possible. Once you tuck yourself into bed, the gentle lapping of the water against the shore will be sure to send you off into a peaceful sleep.

Accommodation & Facilities

The handful of safari-style tents here are situated close to the water’s edge, and each one features a small veranda underneath a canvas ceiling which are perfect for gazing out across the lake. Inside your tent you’ll enjoy a comfortable double bed, traditional decoration and a flushing toilet and bucket shower which are powered by a generator. The communal mess tent further on has wooden decking and a firepit outside, the perfect place for a beer as the sun goes down.

You’ll be prepared fantastic fresh food by the staff who also share the island with you, served up in the communal mess tent which offers a great venue for interacting with your fellow guests during meals.

The prime attraction of the camp is its idyllic location, an island sitting in Lake Kivu which is reached by a 30-minute boat ride from the city of Goma. Relaxing on the grass banks in the shade of trees while admiring the view may be all you intend on doing during your stay here, but there are other activities available also. Kayaks and paddle boards are provided for those wishing to take to the lake, while the temperature of the water itself (24°C) makes swimming a pleasant alternative. If you don’t fancy taking a dip, the path that runs the length of the island allows you to get a spot of exercise in without getting wet.

Child Policy

Children are welcome here, but there are age restrictions for some park activities. Children must be at least 12 years of age to hike up Nyiragongo, or 15 years of age to track gorillas and chimps. A minder can be arranged for younger children if parents wish to go trekking.
