As the 11th-largest country in the world, the Democratic Republic of Congo contains vast tracts of land, an amazing amount of biodiversity and untold amounts of mineral resources hidden beneath its mountains and forests. Tragically, this has led to years of political instability and civil war that has ravaged the country. However, there is a haven for intrepid travellers and wildlife alike nestled on the country’s eastern borders with Uganda and Rwanda: Virunga National Park. Established in 1925, Virunga lays claim to the title of Africa’s oldest national park, and through the efforts of park officials, conservationists and committed individuals the world over, its 3,000 square miles have survived the years of turmoil in the DRC. Home to an exceptional variety of animals, plant life and landscapes, Virunga offers a little bit of everything, from ascending the 11,380 ft peak of Mount Nyiragongo – an active volcano - to setting sail on one of Africa’s Great Lakes, Lake Kivu. Visitors can also track the critically endangered mountain gorilla or relax on the idyllic Tchegera Island, home to an abundance of birdlife including eagles, cormorants, herons and gulls.
With lava flows, perennial snowfields, alpine forests and tropical rainforests found within Virunga’s borders, this is truly a one-of-a-kind destination.
