Kibumba Tented Camp

About Kibumba Tented Camp

Opening in October 2017, this tented camp is the newest accommodation option for travellers to Virunga National Park. Kibumba is a great choice for those wanting to stay within the park’s borders, offering an authentic camping experience amidst Virunga’s flora and fauna with the added benefit of not having to drive long distances to begin your trek. Two permanent lodges provide a warm and welcoming space for guests to gather and share stories of their time in this wonderful UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you're a forest-lover with a taste for the traditional, Kibumba is the camp for you.

Considering the gorgeous vegetation which surrounds Kibumba, the 18 safari-style tents here are a wonderful way to immerse one’s self in the natural beauty of Virunga. The design of the two lodge buildings also contributes to the charming Congolese style of the camp.

Nestled in the shadow of Mount Nyiragongo, this tented camp offers views of the surrounding mountains and a real sense of being one with the forest.

Accommodation & Facilities

Single, double and triple occupancies are offered here at Kibumba. Recently installed plumbing provides flushing toilets and hot water for showers in the tents’ en-suite bathrooms, and the comfortable beds with linen bedding ensure a relaxing night's sleep. Close to the campsite are two permanent lodge areas, which make use of stone, thatch and wood for an attractive and authentic aesthetic. There are dining and lounge areas here, where you can enjoy an aperitif at the fully stocked bar before sitting down to dinner.

Dinner is served to all guests in the communal dining room, making use of fresh and delicious produce which will provide you with plenty of energy for your volcano and gorilla treks.

Situated near the trailhead which leads up Nyiragongo, this camp is an ideal choice for guests wanting to scale the volcano's heights and take in the incredible views from its summit. You can also walk straight into the forest and begin your gorilla tracking alongside professional guides without having to drive. The Kibumba marketplace is just a walk away, perfect for those looking to experience the vibrant local culture.

Child Policy

Children are welcome here, but there are age restrictions for some park activities. Children must be at least 12 years of age to hike up Nyiragongo, or 15 years of age to track gorillas and chimps. A minder can be arranged for younger children if parents wish to go trekking.
