The experience

An exciting small group safari taking in some of the highlights of Borneo including the orangutans of Sepilok, a privately guided tour of the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre, the diverse fauna and flora of the Kinabatangan River and the canopy walkways, wild orangutans and wild elephants of the Danum Valley Conservation Area. A safari that puts you in the right place at the right time in order to maximise your wildlife viewings, you will hopefully spot wild orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, gibbons and more.

This is a small group wildlife safari limited to just 8 guests at a time. Departures are on specific dates. This small group safari is an excellent way of seeing the wildlife highlights of Borneo, and if you want to, it is easy to add a little bit of beach relaxation at the end (or beginning!) or your trip.

Day 1 Arrive Sepilok
On arrival you’ll be met at Sandakan Airport and transferred to Sepilok. You’ll be able to check in from 14:00 and prepare for your upcoming wildlife safari.

Day 2 Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary
After breakfast you’ll take the short walk to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary for the morning and afternoon feedings. A visit to the Sanctuary will allow you to come in close contact with the remarkable "man of the forest". It is interesting and exciting to watch as these large red apes are astonishingly gentle, highly intelligent and will gaze at you with almost disconcerting frankness. In between, make a stop at the Rainforest Discovery Centre where you can gain a bird’s eye view of the forest on a stroll along the canopy walkway. In the evening set off into the jungle in search of the nocturnal jungle wildlife.

Day 3 Sepilok - Lower Kinabatangan River

Today you will spend the morning at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) with a privately guided tour by the CEO and Founder, Mr Wong. Understand more about the sun bears, who are the smallest and least known members of the bear species and their populations are rapidly diminishing in South East Asia.The BSBCC rescue young bears after their mothers are killed and they are captured to become unwilling and uncared for pets.They also promote conservation through education and other forms in attempt to encourage others to care for the bears delicate habitat.

This afternoon, you transfer to Sim Sim Jetty in Sandakan to make your transfer across the bay and in to the mouth of the Kinabatangan River. Along the 80 minute transfer, you will witness small local communities at the river's edge, as well as a variety of wildlife. Enjoy a free evening to settle in to your new surroundings.

Day 4 Lower Kinabatangan River - Bilit

After breakfast you will continue on up the Kinabatangan River by boat, keeping an eye open for wildlife endemic to the area. Lunch will be served at the next lodge, while this afternoon a variety of further excursions along the river will be available. In the evening you may wish to take part in a night walk to observe nocturnal species of wildlife within the surrounding forests.

Days 5-6 Bilit

You’ll have two full days where you can opt for the river safari excursions and explore a variety of fauna and flora along the banks of the Kinabatangan River including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, tree snakes, crocodiles, civets, monitor lizards, macaques and much more. Herds of wild elephant are also known to pass through the park. 

On the evening of day 6, at sunset, you visit the Gomantong Caves, the largest limestone outcrop in the Sabah region (an approximate 30min drive). It is here, within the 3,924 hectare Gomantong Forest Reserve, that wild orangutans, Mouse Deer, Wild Boar, and Wild Buffalo can sometimes be spotted. Up to 300,000 bats, consisting of 64 differing species, are thought to live in the caves. This is a remarkable spectacle as these bats fly out of the cave at sunset to head off on their night’s forage.

Day 7 Bilit - Danum Valley

Today you make your way southwards to the renowned Danum Valley. On arrival at your rainforest lodge you will have time to sit back and relax and enjoy the surroundings. Danum Valley is one of the best remaining examples of how Borneo's forests used to be, with a thick tropical canopy and a variety of wildlife.

Days 8-9 Danum Valley

During the next two days, you will enjoy the Danum Valley. Set up to protect the area from logging, Danum Valley encompasses 43 square kilometres of pristine rainforest. Aside from this, the conservation area has a variety of wildlife including orangutans, a variety of birdlife, clouded leopard and elephant. With a canopy walkway, a viewpoint which looks out over the jungle canopy and the dramatic mountains this conservation area is definitely worth dropping in on.

Day 10 Danum Valley - Lahad Datu - Kota Kinabalu

Today you will be transferred to Lahad Datu for your onward flight– (B)
